What drove rapper Sean to finish an 81.5km run despite a muscle injury

The 815 Run marks its 7th year, with this year’s donations totaling 2.6 billion won

Korean rapper Sean of Jinusean ran the 815 Run, an 81.5-kilometer marathon, on Saturday despite suffering from a muscle injury.

The marathon attracted fresh attention when a video of the race, uploaded to Sean’s YouTube channel “Together with Sean” on Thursday, included detailed footage illustrating how he coped with the injury.

The 815 Run is an annual donation campaign Sean has held with Habitat for Humanity Korea since 2020, marking Liberation Day on August 15 and honoring Korea’s independence fighters. He completed the course in 8 hours, 20 minutes and 2 seconds, starting around 5 a.m. and finishing at around 1 p.m.

When his YouTube film crew asked him about his injury on race day, he said he felt fine, though he admitted he had trouble walking after running during the worst of the injury.

“But it’s a lot better now,” he said. “If the pain gets too severe in the later part of the marathon, I will finish by crawling if I have to.”

True to his word, Sean pushed through the race despite stopping multiple times midway due to severe leg cramps. He crossed the finish line through sheer determination.

Medical staff on site voiced concern afterward, with one saying, “I don’t know how he ran in that condition; the muscles may have been damaged.”

Sean simply smiled and replied, “If it weren’t for the injury, I would’ve run even better.” He lost 4.8kg over the course of the run.

This year’s race drew a record 19,450 runners and raised roughly 2.6 billion won ($1.8 million) in donations.

Sean has pledged to build 100 homes for descendants of independence patriots using the proceeds. He has already completed 23 houses, with ten more planned for this year.

The race also drew other celebrities and athletes, including Park Bo-gum, Kim Dong-hyun and Lee Young-pyo, who joined as pacers. Sean’s four children, Ha-eum, Ha-rang, Ha-yool and Ha-el, also took turns running alongside their father in relay to help him finish.
