Korea, Mexico seek wider ties in AI, role as middle powers

South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met his Mexican counterpart Roberto Velasco in Seoul on Monday to discuss expanding bilateral cooperation and strengthening coordination between the two middle powers.

During talks at the Foreign Ministry, Cho said the relationship between South Korea and Mexico had become increasingly important amid growing uncertainty in the global economy.

“With global economic uncertainty increasing in areas ranging from supply chains and energy to food and security, relations between our two countries have become more important than ever,” Cho said.

He said the two countries could realize the potential of their relationship by strengthening the institutional foundation for trade and investment while diversifying cooperation into new areas, including artificial intelligence, space, education and the defense industry.

Velasco emphasized the two countries’ shared responsibility in shaping the international order, saying their relationship was based on common principles including democracy, human rights and respect for international law.

He also noted that South Korea and Mexico have worked together through multilateral forums, including the United Nations, Group of 20, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation and MIKTA, a grouping of Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey and Australia.

The two countries have sought to “reflect the perspectives of middle powers in building a more inclusive and representative international order,” Velasco said.

The ministers also discussed President Lee Jae Myung’s planned visit to Mexico. Lee in May accepted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s invitation to visit the country.

Velasco said Lee’s visit would “provide a clear direction for dialogue between the two countries.”
