Korea University tech holding firm clears losses, plans first dividend

Korea University’s technology holding company plans to pay dividends for the first time after wiping out accumulated losses with gains from startup investments.

The move marks a milestone in the university’s efforts to build a self-sustaining technology commercialization model.

Korea University Holdings said Monday it generated 3.55 billion won ($2.6 million) in gains from selling stakes in five portfolio companies during the first half of this year, allowing it to fully offset accumulated deficits.

The company now plans to distribute part of its retained earnings to major shareholders.

Korea University said it would be the first major comprehensive university in Korea to pay dividends through a technology holding company, although similar payouts have previously been made by institutions specializing in science, engineering and medicine, including Pohang University of Science and Technology and Catholic University of Korea.

University technology holding companies are established to commercialize research developed on campus, including by investing in startups founded on university-owned technologies. Returns from successful investments can then be channeled back into research, education and new ventures.

One of Korea University Holdings’ largest exits in the first half involved Azcuris, a startup developing treatments for allergic diseases founded by Jeon Young-ho, a professor at Korea University’s Sejong Campus. The holding company recorded around 1.9 billion won in gains from selling its stake in the startup.

Korea University Holdings has also recorded strong financial growth. In 2025, the company posted 4.5 billion won in revenue, 3.1 billion won in operating profit and 2.8 billion won in net profit, placing it among the top-performing university technology holding companies nationwide.

Investment gains will also be reinvested in early-stage technology companies.

In the second half of this year, Korea University Holdings plans to jointly establish a 10 billion won deep-tech fund with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. The company expects to secure more than 20 billion won in new investment capital by the end of the year.

The company has also expanded its role in government-backed startup support programs. It led university technology holding companies in the number of startups selected for the Tech Incubator Program for Startup, or TIPS, for three consecutive years beginning in 2023.

“Building on these results, we will further expand technology commercialization and early-stage startup investment in deep-tech sectors with strong growth potential,” Korea University Holdings CEO Woo Sang-hyun said.
