The US Embassy in South Korea marked the 250th anniversary of American independence with a gala reception at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on Tuesday evening, bringing together diplomats, government officials, business leaders and cultural figures to celebrate one of the world’s longest-standing alliances.
American and South Korean flags stood side by side as guests filled the ballroom, reflecting a relationship that has evolved from a military alliance into a broad partnership spanning security, trade, technology, culture and people-to-people exchanges.

In his remarks, US Charge d’Affaires ad interim James Heller reaffirmed the “ironclad” South Korea-US alliance, describing it as the bedrock of the two countries’ shared security, prosperity and democratic values.
Cho congratulated the United States on its 250th anniversary, saying the nation’s enduring commitment to the principles of freedom, democracy and the rule of law has inspired people around the world. The two diplomats later raised a toast to commemorate the occasion.

The reception paired the formality of a diplomatic celebration with the energy of Korea’s music scene. Veteran singer Insooni performed both the South Korean and US national anthems, while Jay Park and Psy headlined the evening’s entertainment.
The event also drew prominent political and business figures, including former People Power Party lawmaker Ihn Yo-han and Chung Mong-joon, chairman of the Asan Foundation, who greeted Heller during the reception.
The celebration came as Seoul and Washington continue to expand cooperation across security, economic and strategic issues amid an increasingly complex regional and global landscape.
The annual reception commemorates the adoption of the US Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776.
