Woman arrested on suspicion of killing father who scolded her for investment losses

Father repeatedly criticized daughter for losing hundreds of million won, police say

A woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of killing her father while he slept, after he repeatedly criticized her for losing money he had lent her to invest.

The Cheonan Dongnam Police Station in South Chungcheong Province said Sunday that the woman had admitted to fatally striking her father, who was in his 60s, with a blunt object at an apartment in Cheonan on Sept. 13.

According to police, the woman lost several hundred million won her father had given her several years earlier in stocks and other assets.

She told investigators that her father blamed her for the losses whenever they met, saying, “It’s your fault,” and that the repeated criticism had caused her stress.

The alleged killing came to light more than three weeks later, according to police.

After leaving her belongings at a lodging in Sokcho, Gangwon Province, and becoming unreachable, she was reported missing. Officers searching for her visited her father’s home Thursday and found him dead.

Police identified her as a suspect based on evidence including the fact that no gas had been used at the apartment since her visit, and arrested her without a warrant. A court issued a warrant for her continued arrest on Saturday.

“She told investigators that she decided to commit the crime that day, and we have so far found no indications that she planned it in advance,” a police official said. “We will examine her mobile phone and conduct further investigations to establish the exact circumstances and motive.”
