South Korea reaches U-17 volleyball quarterfinals

South Korea advanced to the quarterfinals of the FIVB U-17 Women’s Volleyball World Championship with a 3-0 sweep of the Philippines on Thursday in Los Andes, Chile.

South Korea, coached by Lee Seung-yeo, remained unbeaten after winning all five of its group-stage matches. It will face Turkey, which swept Japan 3-0 in the round of 16, in the quarterfinals Saturday in Santiago.

Outside hitter Son Seo-yeon, nicknamed “Little Kim Yeon-koung,” led South Korea with 19 points, including three blocks and three aces. Eo Min-seo added 15 points and Jang Su-in had 10.

South Korea took control of the opening set after Choi Min-ju’s block gave the team a 12-11 lead. With the score at 20-19, Eo and Son helped South Korea pull away with three straight points before Geum Byeol closed out the set with an ace.

South Korea cruised through the second set and opened an 11-5 lead early in the third behind consecutive aces from Son. Back-to-back blocks by Son and Choi and an ace from Eo extended the lead to 20-11.
