S. Korea adds 3 swimming medals as competition winds down

South Korea swooped up three more medals in the pool at the Asian Games on Wednesday, raising its total to 12 medals with two more days left in Tokyo.

Hwang Sun-woo claimed silver in the men’s 200-meter freestyle at Tokyo Aquatics Centre with a time of 1:44.62, as he came up short of winning his second straight gold.

Zhang Zhanshuo of China won the gold medal in 1:43.49, breaking Hwang’s Asian record of 1:43.92.

Kim Seung-won won bronze in the women’s 100m backstroke in 1:00.10 for her second individual medal in Tokyo, following her 50m backstroke bronze medal from Monday.

Kim then joined three teammates for the bronze medal in the mixed 4x100m medley relay. After Kim covered the opening backstroke leg, Choi Dong-yeol followed with breaststroke and An Se-hyeon handled butterfly. Kim Young-beom anchored the freestyle leg, helping the team set a new national record time with 3:44.12.

Kim Young-beom’s 50m freestyle title from Monday remains South Korea’s only gold medal so far. With the swimming competition set to end Friday and one of the country’s top stars, Kim Woo-min, sidelined with a shoulder injury, South Korea appears unlikely to match its Asiad record total of 22 medals, including six gold medals, from three years ago in Hangzhou, China.

China, after winning 30 gold medals at home in 2023, is up to 21 gold medals through Wednesday. (Yonhap)
