Police are set to decide this week whether to disclose the identity of a university lecturer accused of killing and dismembering a Chinese international student who had taken his classes.
The Gyeongsan Police Station in North Gyeongsang Province said Monday that an identity disclosure committee will meet this week to review whether to release the name, age and photograph of the suspect, a 31-year-old Chinese national identified by his surname Jeong.
Police said the exact date of the meeting would not be disclosed to protect committee members from external influence.
Jeong’s identity may not be released immediately even if the committee approves disclosure. If he files an objection, police must wait five days before making his information public.
Police also plan to refer the case to prosecutors this week. Jeong was arrested at 7:29 p.m. Tuesday in Hayang-eup, Gyeongsan.
Jeong is accused of killing a 25-year-old Chinese student at his studio apartment in Hayang-eup after the pair entered the residence in the early hours of Aug. 20. Police believe he later dismembered her body and disposed of the remains across several locations in Gyeonggi and North Gyeongsang provinces.
Police recovered additional remains over the weekend and are continuing searches in parts of Gyeonggi Province and Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, based on Jeong’s statements and location records.
Police also suspect Jeong tried to throw off the investigation by filing a missing-person report himself while identifying himself as the victim’s boyfriend.
He was captured on surveillance footage wearing women’s clothing and carrying the victim’s phone to Dongdaegu Station. Police believe he switched off the phone near the station, changed clothes in a restroom and returned home.
