Media watchdog bans access to 64 websites creating pornographic deepfakes

South Korea’s media watchdog said Monday it tracked down and banned access to 64 foreign websites that allow users to create pornographic content and deepfakes using artificial intelligence (AI).

The decision was made at a communications deliberation subcommittee held on the same day, according to the Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC).

Such websites were found to help users create fake sexual images and videos using photos of real people, with a significant number of the platforms supporting the Korean language, the media watchdog said.

The KMCC said it will thoroughly monitor and strongly respond to websites that distribute sexually exploitative content created with AI, saying such content could cause irreversible damage to the victims, once they are distributed online. (Yonhap)
