Questions are growing over the circumstances of Jang Mi-ran’s death after her body was found Monday at a palm tree farm on Jeju Island, about 400 meters from her long-term accommodation.
Jang left the accommodation at around 10:15 p.m. on May 12. Although less than a 10-minute walk away, the farm is in a secluded area.
“I don’t understand it either,” Jang’s boyfriend told TV Chosun. “She repeatedly told me the place scared her when passing by, so I can’t understand why she would be found there.”
A Jeju resident also raised questions about the location online, saying, “The farm is densely planted with Canary Island date palms with sharp, rigid fronds. It’s not a tree with typical branches; getting too close will prick you.”
“Hanging a rope on that tree to die by suicide is almost impossible, even for men,” they added, questioning the police’s preliminary assessment that Jang may have died by hanging.
Acting National Police Agency Commissioner General Yoo Jae-sung said Monday that there were “no signs yet suggesting foul play” and that authorities preliminarily believed Jang had died by hanging, based on a report from the Jeju police chief.
Jang’s identity was confirmed Tuesday through a dental examination during an autopsy, according to the Jeju Provincial Police Agency. No fractures or external injuries were found.
