Christopher Nolan’s latest movie “The Odyssey” surpassed 3 million admissions in South Korea on its 10th day in theaters, hinting at a strong run during the upcoming holiday period.
According to the Korea Box Office Information System, the movie crossed the 3 million mark as of Friday at 7 a.m. It was released in Korea on Aug. 5.
On Thursday alone, The Odyssey drew about 234,000 moviegoers, retaining the No. 1 spot at the domestic box office while accounting for 54.8 percent of daily box office revenue.
Based on the ancient Greek poet Homer’s epic poem, the film follows Odysseus, played by Matt Damon, king of Ithaca, on his long journey home after the Trojan War.
Mythical settings and figures from the original poem were recreated by Nolan, all the while using minimal computer-generated imagery.
The film also reinterprets characters like Penelope, played by Anne Hathaway, and Sinon, played by Elliot Page.
The film is the first movie in history to have been entirely shot with IMAX film cameras, having used about 640 kilometers of film.
Competition for tickets to premium-format screenings has intensified, with some IMAX theaters quickly selling out across all time slots.
Holding second place at the domestic box office Thursday was “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” with around 121,000 admissions.
