Coupang tops app usage in every age bracket

E-commerce giant Coupang has maintained its grip on Korean consumers across every age group, data showed Wednesday, widening its lead even as Chinese platforms close in as its nearest challengers.

According to data from WiseApp Retail, Coupang led all major shopping apps in monthly active users among Korean smartphone users across all age brackets in July.

Users in their 40s made up its largest base, at 8.54 million, followed by their 20s and 30s in the 6 million range. Users in their 50s totaled 5.86 million, while those in their 10s and younger and those 60 and older remained in the 3 million range.

Chinese e-commerce apps trailed closest behind in most brackets.

AliExpress ranked second among users in their 10s and younger, with 800,000, and in their 20s and 30s, with around 1.8 million each. Temu took second among those in their 50s and 60 and older, with about 1.7 million and 1 million users, respectively.

The 40s bracket held its ground against Chinese platforms, with Naver Plus Store ranking second there at 3.22 million users, ahead of AliExpress’s 3.07 million. Naver Plus Store’s showing was uneven elsewhere, ranking fifth among users in their 10s and younger, fourth among those 60 and older, and outside the top five among users in their 50s.

Meanwhile, Shinsegae Group’s e-commerce unit Gmarket took fourth place in the 40s bracket and fifth in the 50s.
