Musinsa’s first beauty flagship gets a pharmacy twist

Musinsa brings its discovery-platform playbook to CJ Olive Young’s turf

Musinsa built its name by spotting fashion trends early. Its latest beauty bet takes it somewhere more clinical — and into more direct competition with Korea’s dominant beauty retailer, CJ Olive Young.

The fashion platform opened its first standalone beauty flagship Friday in Hongdae, western Seoul, a youth shopping district with heavy foot traffic.

While CJ Olive Young has built its leadership around convenience, broad selection and an extensive store network, Musinsa seeks to differentiate itself through pharmacist-led consultations, emerging brands, and closer links between its online platform and physical stores.

“Consumers now know exactly what they are struggling with and what they need,” said Kim, head of Musinsa Beauty’s offline team, during a media event Friday. “That is the shift pharmacy beauty answers.”

Named Beauty Onnuri, the pharmacy occupies 176 square meters in the basement of the four-story flagship. It carries about 2,000 products from some 270 brands.

Unlike a conventional Korean pharmacy, where medicines typically dominate shelf space, Beauty Onnuri reverses the ratio: About 90 percent of its offerings are beauty, dermocosmetic and supplement products.

The concept centers on expert curation. Customers can discuss specific skin or scalp concerns with a pharmacist and receive product recommendations alongside professional guidance.

Two staff pharmacists can conduct consultations entirely in English, catering to the large number of international visitors in Hongdae. Foreigners account for 67 percent of foot traffic at Musinsa’s stores in the neighborhood, according to the company.

The flagship also offers passport-holder discounts, tax-free checkout and promotions with nearby hotels.

The rest of the 1,262-square-meter building functions as what Musinsa calls a discovery channel, connecting shoppers with emerging K-beauty labels and established brands they may have overlooked.

The Hongdae flagship’s first floor features makeup from about 140 brands, niche fragrances, colored contact lenses and fashion-beauty collaborations. One section is dedicated to brands that are popular overseas but difficult to find in Korea.

The second floor focuses on skin concerns, presenting about 220 skincare brands alongside haircare products. A ranking zone displays the seven top-selling products in each category, with the selection updated every three months. More than 80 percent of the products currently featured there come from smaller labels.

“What is displayed here shows how many opportunities a brand pursued offline and how many customers it actually reached,” Kim said.

The third floor offers a terrace and cafe featuring a robot barista.

Musinsa plans to open another standalone beauty store in Seongsu in November, followed by a hybrid location combining beauty with Musinsa Kicks on Jeju Island.

The expansion remains modest compared with CJ Olive Young’s retail footprint, but it signals Musinsa’s intention to become a more serious beauty player. Its strategy is to serve as a proving ground for emerging labels, connect them with customers and ultimately help take them overseas.
