Seoul seeks China's support for peace, denuclearization efforts on Korean Peninsula

South Korea has asked China to play a constructive role in supporting Seoul’s push for peaceful coexistence with North Korea and progress toward denuclearization, national security adviser Wi Sung-lac said Friday.

Speaking at a press briefing, Wi said he conveyed Seoul’s position on denuclearization and the establishment of peace on the Korean Peninsula during talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, earlier this month.

Wi said Seoul had “actively requested China’s constructive cooperation” as the Lee Jae Myung administration moves forward with the peaceful coexistence policy outlined by the president in his Liberation Day address.

“I explained in detail our position on denuclearization and the establishment of peace,” Wi said.

According to Wi, Wang said China’s policy toward the Korean Peninsula remained consistent and stable and that Beijing would continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability.

Wi also said Seoul and Beijing agreed to begin full-scale preparations for Lee’s planned attendance at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November, building on what he described as progress toward a broader restoration of bilateral relations following summits last November and in January.

The two sides also agreed to regularly operate a dialogue channel between South Korea’s national security adviser and the head of China’s Central Foreign Affairs Commission Office, after a hiatus of nearly five years.

Wi said he would visit China at a mutually convenient time as part of efforts to maintain the channel.

The two sides also exchanged views on regional and global developments and discussed ways to revive trilateral cooperation among South Korea, China and Japan.
