North Korean troops briefly cross MDL on eastern front

North Korean troops recently crossed the Military Demarcation Line on the eastern front, moving about 10 meters into South Korean territory while conducting a foot patrol, South Korean military officials said Friday.

According to Joint Chiefs of Staff official, the military had confirmed the crossing and was maintaining readiness in accordance with standard operational procedures.

“We are maintaining our readiness posture in accordance with normal operational procedures regarding the recent crossing of the MDL by North Korean troops on the eastern front, and we are closely monitoring related developments,” an official said.

The JCS declined to say whether the crossing was intentional or accidental, citing operational security.

Asked about reports that the North Korean troops were armed at the time, the official said there was “nothing further to add.”

Sources familiar with the situation, however, said that the troops temporarily crossed about 10 meters south of the MDL while conducting a routine patrol on foot, and that the area in question is considered by North Korea as being north of the MDL.

Differences over the exact location of the MDL stem in part from the loss of many of the physical markers installed after the 1953 Korean Armistice Agreement.

Over the decades, a significant number of those markers have disappeared, leaving some areas where South Korea, North Korea and the UNC do not fully agree on where the line runs.

Such discrepancies have long raised concerns that routine North Korean military activity near the border could result in accidental crossings or, in a worst-case scenario, trigger an unintended military clash.
