Posco documentary spotlights steel’s second life

Posco is highlighting steel recycling and electric arc furnace technology in the second installment of its YouTube documentary series on the industry’s decarbonization.

The steelmaker released “Steel, Finding New Life,” the latest episode of “The Evolution of Steel,” on its Posco Studio channel.

Following the first episode, “Steel, Beyond the Age of Fire,” the new episode examines how scrap metal can be recycled and reused as the industry seeks to reduce carbon emissions.

The episode opens at the studio of welding and casting artist Park Ye-ji, who transforms discarded metal into artwork. A new version of her work “The Cycle of Steel and Nature” illustrates how used steel can gain a second life through recycling.

The documentary then moves to the electric arc furnace at Posco’s Gwangyang Steelworks, showing the recycling process on an industrial scale.

The furnace uses electricity to melt steel scrap and can produce up to 2.5 million metric tons of molten steel annually. Posco says the process can reduce carbon emissions by as much as 75 percent compared with conventional blast furnace production.

“EAF technology is a practical solution that can be implemented now, during the critical window for reducing carbon emissions,” said Jeong Ho-hyun, the facility’s deputy plant manager.

Kim Jin-soo, professor of resource and environmental engineering at Hanyang University, warned that the transition could raise production costs and affect the competitiveness of steelmakers and related industries.

He called for greater investment in clean-energy infrastructure and policy support to ease the shift.

The episode has attracted 860,000 views and 260 comments since its release.
