A musical theater concert tracing the life and teachings of Jesus will open in Seoul on Aug. 29, combining live music, drama and a charity initiative.
“Yeshua 33 Years,” written, composed and directed by Lee Chang-ju, is structured around six stages: birth, questioning, evangelism, sacrifice, resurrection and commissioning. The audience is invited to follow the story through the perspective of Jesus’ disciples.
The production blends orchestra, band, choir and theatrical performances, with tracks including “Yeshua 33 Years,” “Jesus and Waltz,” “Passover 12” and the lead track “Inja,” the Korean word for benevolence.
The cast includes singer Kan Mi-youn and musical actors Song Kwang-il and Shin Mi-youn. The Korea Artbility Chamber, an ensemble bringing together musicians with and without disabilities, will also take part.
Organizers say the project asks whether worshippers are seeking Jesus himself or emotional comfort in his name, while emphasizing Scripture and practical acts of love.
Proceeds from music royalties and ticket sales will be used through Onnuri Church’s social mission programs to provide meals for children and seniors living alone.
Six performances are scheduled for Aug. 29-30, Sept. 5-6 and Sept. 12-13 at Gonggam Center in Jung-gu, Seoul. All run from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
