Two suspects accused of plotting an attack against former Democratic Party of Korea leader Rep. Jung Chung-rae were referred to prosecutors without detention, police said Thursday.
The Yeongdeungpo Police Station in Seoul said the two, who reportedly plotted Jung’s assassination in a public social media chat room, were sent to the prosecution on July 10 on suspicion of intimidation. Details such as the suspects’ ages and genders had not been disclosed as of Thursday.
The suspects allegedly posted messages in the chat room including “Let’s kill Jung” and “recruiting a Jung Chung-rae assassination squad” in May, ahead of the June 3 local elections. Jung was the head of the ruling Democratic Party at that time.
The Democratic Party had asked police to investigate the posts on May 16, after learning of the threats. It also requested police protection for Jung, citing concerns over his safety.
Police did not elaborate on whether the suspects had developed a concrete plan beyond the online messages.
No further information was provided on the circumstances surrounding the alleged plot or whether the investigation involved additional individuals.
