Racism and Misogyny: The Troubling Workplace Culture at Shangri-La Hotels

Allegations of racism, harassment, and cultural insensitivity have surfaced at Shangri-La, as an eight-year employee resigns in protest, revealing a toxic environment allegedly spearheaded by General Manager Andreas Streiber and finance manager Koteswar Rao. The employee, who has worked at the hotel for nearly a decade, detailed a pattern of racist remarks and verbal abuse in two explosive emails obtained by this outlet through a whistleblower.

In one instance, the employee recounts how Koteswar Rao, upset over a work delay, hurled expletives at her, calling her a “fucking lady,” leaving her distressed and humiliated. The whistleblower feels the employee should take formal action against Streiber and Rao.

More startling, however, are the allegations against Streiber, who is said to have made deeply offensive remarks about India and its people. His claims include sweeping racist statements like, “Indians are dirty,” and “Indian children are ugly,” remarks that not only offend the employee but also the wider workforce at the hotel.

According to the resignation letter, Streiber’s admiration for authoritarian regimes such as China has only exacerbated the problem. The whistleblower, with clear exhaustion, explains how these continuous fat-shaming, sexist and comparisons to China have left her feeling insulted and demeaned.

She also reveals that these experiences have taken a toll on her health, forcing her to prioritize her well-being. The resignation comes at a time when workplace harassment and cultural insensitivity are increasingly being scrutinized across industries.

While the complainant has chosen not to speak at this time, these revelations could have serious consequences for Shangri-La’s reputation.
